Our featured performer for April was Jim Short. Jim acted the part of an autistic savant with “special abilities.” Performing as “Robert,” he first had a participant tell him where to cut a column of newspaper print. He read the mind of the participant who looked at where he had made the cut. Next he directed a participant to open a book to any page and read a paragraph to himself. “Robert” was able to draw a picture depicting an item mentioned in the paragraph. Finally, he passed around a number of cartoons clipped from the newspaper. He then clipped six of them face down to a piece of poster board. Audience members told which ones to eliminate (no force!) until only one cartoon remained. The poster board was turned around to reveal a drawing of the main character in the selected cartoon.
Magical Michael Stephanic performed an effect that he called “Synchronicity.” Two audience members’ rings were locked onto the shaft of a combination lock. Three different audience participants chose three-digit numbers, which were added to produce a total. When the lock was set to that number, the lock opened.
Steve Crawford performed a Q&A act. Audience members wrote information on cards. Steve held each folded card to his head and was able to reveal the information to the audience members.
J. David Teeman, AKA “The Good News Wise Guy,” had an audience member select one of three magazines and then turn to any page and select a word. He was handed a thesaurus to look up the word, but found that the page was missing. An envelope previously given to another audience member was opened to reveal the missing page, with the selected word circled.
Michael King had a volunteer freely select a number from 1 to 52. When a deck of cards was removed from the deck and handed to the volunteer, he counted down to that number and found that he had stopped at the previously predicted card.
Lee Woodside demonstrated “Aggie Math.” He showed how any two numbers could be multiplied together by only multiplying or dividing by 2.
Jim Green showed us some very nice wheeled tripod holders that he had purchased off the Internet. He attaches his table bases to them to allow him to easily maneuver them on stage.
