June is the month for our annual Close-Up Contest. Our first contestant was Murphy Villa (AKA Bruce Rodesney). Bruce wowed us with his version of Card Warp.

David Teeman asked Nikki to assist him. He brought out a number of magic markers, each of a different color. Using a point at two, eliminate one procedure, they eliminated all but one marker, which had an orange cap. David asked Nikki to read the prediction and she said, “Orange.” However, it turned out that she was just trying to be helpful because the paper was actually blank. David then showed that all the other markers had a cap that did not match the color of the marker. However, the chosen orange marker matched the color of its cap.

Lee Woodside invited Nikki and Matt to join him at the close-up table. He had Nikki select a playing card and replace it in the middle of the deck. He now told Matt that he would be the magician and find her card. Lee handed Matt a pair of goggles and Matt looked through the deck while wearing the goggles. He pulled out one card and it was, indeed, the one that Nikki had selected.

Lee brought out a small brass tube that he said was the world’s smallest fully-functioning candy factory. He poured three cocoa beans and a dime from it, which he then replaced. He handed Nikki a sugar packet and had her pour the sugar into the tube. Lee then had her shake up the ingredients. Next, he brought out a Bic lighter and heated the ingredients. After giving time for the “candy” to cool, he had Nicci turn over the tube and out dropped a Hershey’s Kiss.

Rick Johnson also invited Nicci and Matt to assist him. Rick showed two piles of playing cards and asked that Nicci select seven cards, drawing cards from which ever pile she chose. Rick’s prediction correctly prophesied that there would be two red and five black cards selected. Rick repeated this procedure with Matt and correctly predicted four red and three black cards. Finally, Rick had each of them select a card and replace it in the deck. After shuffling the deck, Rick spread the cards to show that the selected cards were the only two reversed in the deck.

Shaun Clark asked that Cassidy Smith assist him. After having Cassidy select and sign a playing card, Shaun performed a very nice multi-phase ambitious card routine.

While the votes were tallied by our illustrious Treasurer, Michael King, Cassidy Smith led a discussion on picking one’s character for magic performances. He gave us some great ideas for doing this.

Once the scores were tallied, Cassidy announced the winners. Rick Johnson won first place, Lee Woodside second place, and Shaun Clark third place. Each of the winners received a cash prize.
