We welcomed Shoot Ogawa as our lecturer on November 4th. His handling of the linking rings is nothing short of jaw dropping. He also showed us magic with cards and coins and taught some great routines that could be performed by mere mortals.
Cassidy Smith was our featured performer at the November meeting. He performed a beautiful cups and balls routine using two cups and a wand. His final production was amazing, with silk scarves, a large ball, a cascade of coins, and a (foam) rabbit.
Zach Heath introduced the topic of “turkey magic”, which refers to tricks that look great in the catalog or on the video clip, but turn out to be disappointing when they come in the mail. Lee Woodside offered the infamous “Smoke from Finger Tips” as an example that has endured for decades. Jim Green pointed out that sometimes the setup time for a trick can be excessive, which was not pointed out in the advertisement.
Our next topic of discussion was creativity. Zach Heath outlined his approach and showed us how he uses his iPad as a tool in keeping detailed notes. Lee Woodside offered specific examples of how he has developed new effects, including his “Aunt Clara’s Prediction” and “Satan’s Scrolls”.
Michael King performed a very powerful “cutting to the aces” routine that he developed. Jim Green performed a borrowed initialed coin to iPhone effect that was very commercial. Lee Woodside performed an effect that tested both his mind reading and artistic skills called “Deja Zoo”. He was able to sketch the animals that audience members were thinking of.
It was announced that our December meeting will have a dinner theater theme, with food and a magic competition. The meeting was adjourned after nominations were accepted for 2013 officers.
