We were very pleased to host lecturer Alan Sands in lieu of our normal September meeting. This lecture was offered free to all paid-up members of Ring 46. Alan began by making a balloon animal and spicing up the presentation with a few double entendres.

Alan performed the complete “Sandsational” rope routine originated by his famous (in the magic world at least) father, George Sands. This a four-minute routine using a rope (Alan described the best kind to use), an audience participant, scissors, a change bag, a latex dove, and even a bang wand. This is most definitely a crowd-pleasing routine.

Alan brought out five miniature rubber chickens and entertained us with a stripped-down version of the venerable sheep and thieves routine. He then gave us the benefit of his professional expertise involving microphones, audio, and rechargeable batteries.

Alan performed the “Ropesational” routine, which is a two and a half-minute rope routine that requres no actual cutting. The advantage is that one can use the same ropes over and over.

For close-up situations, Alan used a dollar bill to create an origame purse. After making the purse, he pulled a quarter from it.

Alan showed five razor blades and asked that an audience participant select one of them. He showed that the chosen blade was sharp by slicing a playing card with it. He then swallowed the razor blades and chased them with a length of thread. Reaching into his mouth and grasping the end of the thread, he slowly pulled it out. Suspended from the thread at even intervals were the razor blades.

Alan brought forth a deck of playing cards and offered them to an audience member for shuffling. After retrieving the deck, Alan shuffled them a couple of more times and then handed half a deck to each of two audience participants. He asked several audience members to each name a playing card and Alan immediately told which person held that playing card. He then named the remaining playing cards held by each of the participants. He said that this is the “Extra Sandsational Perception (ESP)” routine.

We highly recommend Alan Sands as a lecturer for any magic organization. Perhaps a bit of his professionalism will rub off on you!
