For our August meeting, Jordan Johnson showed and explained effects that he performs in his shows. After telling us that this was his first lecture, he proceeded to do an excellent job of teaching us his routines.
Jordan started with an effect that he regularly uses to open his shows, which he calls “Intuition.” A stuffed bear was tossed into the audience to select a random audience member. The selected person was asked to name a country, an animal, a fruit, and a couple of geometric shapes and colors. He was then told to remove the prediction from inside the bear, which proved to be almost 100% correct.
Jordan then showed us an effect he calls “Hollywood”. One participant randomly selected three male movie stars and the other three female stars. As each picked a star, a photo was removed from the prediction envelope showing that they were, indeed, a real-life couple.
He next showed us “Trapped,” which is an impromptu method of magically putting the cap into a bottle without the use of a PK ring.
In a routine he called “No Questions Asked,” Jordan showed a blue deck and a red deck to both be completely normal, front and back. He had a participant merely think of a card from the red deck. He then spread all the cards in the red deck face up, showing that the thought of card had vanished. The blue deck was then spread face down, showing that one red card had magically entered the deck. When it was turned face up, it proved to be the thought of card.
He then showed us “Counterfeit,” where he was able to divine the denomination and then the serial number of a participant’s currency. He then magically transformed it into a higher denomination bill and invited the participant to “keep the change.”
Jordan next invited an audience member to select a drink coaster from among several that he held. He tore a piece off the coaster and caused it to vanish. He then invited the participant to pick up a sealed deck of cards from table. Inside the unbroken seal was the torn-off piece, which matched perfectly.
Jordan ended his performance by divining the pass code of an audience member’s iPhone. As a “kicker” ending, he pulled out his own phone and showed that the pass code was a perfect match.
